Moreover, GHG emissions due to mealworm production were much lower than other animals. Thus, the land and water usage of rearing insects are extremely low compared to that of cattle and pigs. Insects produce substantially less ammonia and greenhouse gases than cattle and pigs for instance, pigs produce 10–100 times more greenhouse gas emissions per kg of weight than mealworms. The energy required to produce 1 kg of mealworm protein is lower than beef and pork and slightly higher than chicken and milk (Source: FAO). Mealworms can play an important role in global ecosystems and provide services necessary for human survival. Moreover, a third of those crops harvested are fed to livestock. Globally, twice as much land is used for rearing livestock than growing crops. The rising demand for meat is expected to pressure natural areas to be converted to farmlands. By 2025, it is estimated that at least 1.8 million people will be living in regions with inadequate freshwater supplies, and two-thirds of the global population will be in areas under pressure from falling water sources (Source: FAO). The environmental impact of food production is increasingly brought to the forefront of sustainability debates, particularly surrounding the reduction of CO2 emission and other factors, such as water and land use.
It lessens the burden on the environment by reducing GHG emissions and water, land, and feed usage. The mealworm farming business is impactful at its root.
